David Johnston is a seasoned Irish/Scottish bagpiper with a deep-rooted passion for the instrument that ignited in his early years. His musical journey unfolded within the prestigious Queens Irish Guards Regimental Pipe Band, where he fine-tuned his skills. David’s remarkable talent has graced significant events globally, from the Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg Tattoos to Buckingham Palace State Banquets and Annual Events in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family.
His commitment to excellence has garnered him multiple accolades, including triumphs at the World Pipe Band Championships and various Solo Piping Competitions. Presently, David holds the esteemed position of Senior Pipe Major and Musical Director of the Crossed Swords Pipe Band, among the world’s largest pipe bands, as well as the International Celtic Pipes and Drums and Dancers.

Following an intensive 9-month study at Edinburgh Castle, Army School of Piping, David attained the highest attainable Bagpiping certificate. Recognizing his exceptional skill and expertise, he was appointed as Pipe Major. In this esteemed role, David assumed the crucial responsibility of upholding the highest standards of performance for Army Bagpipe music, showcasing his leadership and commitment to excellence in the world of bagpiping.
Leader Of The Crossed Swords Pipes and Drums and The International Celtic Pipes and Drums and Dancers
In his esteemed roles, David serves as the Senior Pipe Major and Musical Director for both the Crossed Swords and the International Celtic Pipes and Drums, along with Celtic Dancers. These distinguished ensembles stand among the largest pipe bands globally. The Crossed Swords musicians actively participate in various military tattoos, including the prestigious Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, showcasing their exceptional talents on an international stage. David’s leadership contributes to the continued success and prominence of these two renowned pipe bands.
